Give a Cat a Purpose. Adopt a Working Cat.

Have a business, enclosed backyard, shed, barn, horse stable, ranch, or farm? Do you like cats—especially for their rodent control abilities—but have allergies or don’t want an indoor pet? Freeman-Fritts is committed to giving outdoor cats a second chance, and our Working Cat program does just that.

If you’re ready to adopt a Working Cat, fill out the Working Cat Questionnaire here.

What Are Working Cats?

Working Cats are outdoor, under-socialized cats who cannot be adopted as traditional pets. They are typically shy, stray, or semi-feral cats that prefer little to no human interaction, making them unsuitable for indoor homes. If surrendered to a shelter, these cats would likely not be adoption candidates.

Working Cats offer an eco-friendly solution to rodent control by putting their natural instincts to work on your property. By adopting a Working Cat, you’re saving the lives of cats who may not otherwise have options. As an added bonus, there’s no adoption fee—though donations are always welcome.

Cats must be provided with daily food and water, as well as adequate shelter from the elements and protection from predators.

All Working Cats Will Be:

  • Spayed or neutered
  • Vaccinated for rabies
  • Vaccinated for distemper (FVRCP) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia)
  • Microchipped and ear-tipped
  • Treated with Bravecto to provide 3 months of Flea Control

Common Questions About Working Cats

How many cats will be relocated to my property?

We’ve found that single cat relocations are not as successful as relocating Working Cats in pairs. Having a buddy seems to increase the likelihood they’ll remain on your property. So depending on the size of your property we recommend cats be adopted in pairs or more.

How long are the cats confined before being released?

It takes a minimum of three weeks for the cats to acclimate to the sights, sounds and smells of their new outdoor home. Freeman-Fritts offers complete relocation set ups and supplies you with everything needed for the holding period, guiding you through the process before, during and after release.

What if one of my cats becomes sick or injured?

You are taking responsibility for the well-being of the cats but should you need assistance please contact us. We are committed to the success of this relationship.

How does the process of adopting Working Cats work?

Simply fill out our Working Cats Questionnaire below so we have your relevant information. Someone will contact you to discuss your property and the plans going forward. If everything is suitable to both parties, we will set up a time for you to pick up and receive instruction on how to properly set up the relocation cages, diagrams will also be provided.

Once those are in place, arraignments will be made for receiving the cats. You will pick them up from us the afternoon of surgery. Instructions will be given at the time of pick up on how to safely set them up in the relocation cages.

A follow up call will be made or by text to check how the transition went.

After the holding period, we will ask that the set up be cleaned and returned to us.

We’re available at any time to address questions or concerns you may have.

We are always in need of safe, outdoor homes for these special felines. Please help spread the word about our program by telling your family, friends, and neighbors.
