Have you ever felt the pull to make a real difference in an animal’s life?
You may already know the slogans: “Adopt, don’t shop” or “The best things in life are rescued.” These messages are incredibly important, and they inspire countless people to open their hearts to animals in need. But there’s another way to make a profound impact—a higher calling, you might say: fostering.
Even more meaningful? Hospice or ultra-senior fostering.
This is rescuing on a whole new level. These are the dogs and cats who have reached their golden years or who face end-stage medical conditions that are still manageable. Too often, these sweet souls arrive at the shelter after being found wandering, abandoned, or left in a ditch. They’ve given years of love and loyalty to their families, only to find themselves alone.
One of those sweet souls is Dakota, an 11-year-old Husky currently in our care. Dakota was originally purchased from a breeder as a puppy. After a year, she was rehomed… and then rehomed again. In fact, she was passed around four different times. By the time she came to us, she had bite wounds covering her neck and an embedded collar that had grown into her skin.
After eleven years of life, this is not the chapter she deserved. These are the animals who don’t belong in a loud, scary shelter. These are the ones who need us the most.

That’s why the team at Freeman-Fritts is proud to introduce our new hospice foster initiative: The Golden Hearts Program.
The Golden Hearts Program was created specifically for our senior and medically fragile pets who deserve dignity, peace, and unconditional love in their final chapter. Through this program, we provide foster homes with all necessary supplies and covered medical care through our clinic. The foster home provides the most important piece: love, comfort, patience, and a quiet place to rest—for however long that may be.
Golden Hearts isn’t about how much time they have left. It’s about how much love we can give them while they’re here.
If you—or someone you know—are willing to open your heart and home to a senior in need, please reach out to us.
And if fostering isn’t possible right now, you can still be part of the Golden Hearts Program. Donations help cover medical care, medications, special diets, soft bedding, and all the little comforts that make their final chapter peaceful and full of love. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference.
