Heads up, friends — Kimmie wants to make sure every furry (and feathered) friend stays safe, warm, and cozy.
Remember: if you’re cold, they’re cold too.
We’re watching increasing chances of cold temperatures coinciding with precipitation this weekend (1/24–1/25). If this occurs, freezing rain may be possible on Saturday.
LIKELY:
• Temps in the 20s–30s Saturday & Sunday
• Below freezing for 18–36 hours
Limit Outdoor Time
Even short potty breaks can be risky in freezing, windy conditions. Frostbite can develop quickly on paws, ears, and tails.
Watch for Signs of Trouble:
• Hypothermia: shivering, weakness, lethargy
• Frostbite: pale, gray, or cold skin on ears, paws, or tails
If you notice these signs, bring pets inside immediately and contact your veterinarian.
Keep Pets Indoors
Seniors, small animals, and short-haired pets are especially vulnerable to freezing temperatures and high winds.
Caring for Community Cats
• Provide shelter with straw only — never blankets or towels (they freeze when wet).
• Check water bowls often so they don’t freeze.
• Before starting your car, tap the hood — cats may hide underneath for warmth.
Do NOT trap animals during freezing weather — it’s dangerous and illegal. Contact Kerr County Animal Control if assistance is needed.
Reminder: Hay is for horses — straw is for strays. Straw stays dry and insulating.
Antifreeze Safety
Even small spills are deadly. Clean up immediately and keep pets away.
Don’t Forget Wildlife
Keep birdbaths and water sources ice-free, and offer birdseed, suet cakes, or nuts to help wildlife maintain energy in the cold.
Let’s all do our part to keep every creature safe and warm. Stay cozy, stay kind, and look out for each other.
